On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
