The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
