Crowds also flooded adjacent streets and attempted to breach the government complex, where the authorities had originally scheduled the open visitation.

Though mainly known as an government critic, Odinga became head of government in 2008 and also struck a political pact with the leader last year in a political journey defined by evolving coalitions.

He inspired intense commitment among followers, especially in his cultural background based in western Kenya, many of whom maintain he was deprived of the highest office by vote manipulation.
